Genesee staff member attended MLK's 'I Have a Dream' speech: Leslie Walker Rare is the moment one can say they witnessed history, but Leslie Walker can. Walker had a close-up view of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr’s legendary “I Have a Dream” speech. Walker, who works at Genesee Elementary School as a cafeteria monitor and previously as a teacher’s aide, stood in about the eighth row in front of the Lincoln Memorial on Aug. 28, 1963. About 250,000 people came to the capital for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a seminal moment in the Civil Rights movement.  Walker’s father, who grew up in the South, was a deacon at (Auburn) Roosevelt Memorial Baptist Church. He was unable to attend but wanted Leslie, who was then 12, and her 11-year-old sister to go for him on a bus chartered by local ... more >>

Kaela Sova, a junior, played viola as a member of the All-State String Orchestra at the All-State NYSSMA Conference in Rochester on Dec. 7. “I'm so proud (of her),” said Auburn High School Orchestra teacher, Victoria Kinney. “Sometimes we have wonderful musicians who don't get in because they have really high competition (in the zone that Auburn is in). To know that she actually made that, you have to perform at the highest level. You have to have a perfect score in the highest level of competition which does not guarantee that you're going to go. Our zone is so competitive and knowing ... more >>

Addressing absenteeism: District helps students return to class: Christopher Sciria AECSD Public Information Specialist Why does attendance matter? It’s a simple question with a simple answer, but it can also be a complicated problem. Being present in class means a child is more likely to succeed in school and also improves their developing socialization skills. The Auburn Enlarged City School District has procedures to help its students who are chronically absent students and provide incentives to come to school. “If you're not here, you can't learn, and that's the problem we're facing right now,” said Dr. Misty Slavic, Auburn’s Superintendent of Schools. “Students need to be here, not only for academics but socialization as well. The longer they're away from school, the ... more >>

The Auburn Enlarged City School District tries to help students when they’re struggling, and one way to do this is with animals. New Superintendent of Schools Dr. Misty Slavic has introduced her therapy dog Roo to the district, and she’s become quite popular. Roo is a 2-year-old boxer Dalmatian mix who is deaf. When Slavic worked in Pennsylvania, she discovered how happy students became when therapy dogs visited. Roo poses with Auburn High School students. “The kids’ faces were lit up, everyone was smiling and happy and just talking ... more >>

That includes employees who come from other areas. “Although I am not originally from Auburn, it has become my home over the last 25 years,” said Amy Mahunik, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “The ... more >>
