Plant Structure & Function Objectives

-Compare the structures of the members of the 2 plant phyla- Bryophytes and Tracheophytes
-List 3 classes of Tracheophytes, giving examples of each
-Identify structures of major plant organs-leaves, stems, roots
-Label a cross section of a leaf, including- cuticle, epidermis, palisade and spongy layers,  xylem and phloem, guard cell, stomate
-Describe the functions of the leaf structures above
-Describe how the leaf of a monocot differs from a dico
-Compare heterotrophic with autotrophic nutrition
-Identify the wavelengths of light most useful for photosynthesis
-Explain the function of chromatography
-Write the word and chemical equation for photosynthesis, identifying reactants and products
-Identify the 2 major phases of photosynthesis, including major events
-Explain the significance of photosynthesis for living things
-Define ATP and explain its use, and explain how it is produced
-Identify the 2 types of stems-green versus woody
-Compare and contrast xylem and phloem-structure and function
-For stems, identify major tissues- transporting, storage, lenticels, bark
-For roots, list 3 functions and identify major structures- root hairs, conducting tissues, storage tissues
-Identify the function of root hairs
-Define transpiration and explain its importance
-Explain gas exchange-oxygen and carbon dioxide-time, location, produced by what process
-Identify Kingdoms with photosynthetic members
-Define cytoplasmic streaming and explain its importance
-Define plasmolysis and identify conditions that would produce it
-Define aerobic cellular respiration, include where and when it occurs, and explain some uses of ATP produced
-Explain the synthesis of proteins and lipids in a plant
-Define meristems, identify locations ,describe results of growth in that region
-Define regulation and identify chemicals in plants that perform it
-Locate plant hormones and identify effects on the plants
-Define phototropisms and explain how they occur
-Define pathogen and identify 2 plant pathogens
