Human Nutrition Objectives

-Define nutrient and list 6 kinds.
-Explain the relationship between size of nutrient and the need for digestion.
-Define peristalsis and explain its function.
-Explain why roughage is needed in the diet.
-Label the organs of the human digestive system.
-Describe the function of teeth and saliva in the oral cavity.
-Define hydrolysis and write the equation that represents chemical digestion in the mouth.
-Describe the structure and function of the esophagus.
-Describe the structure and function of the stomach.
-Write the equation that represents chemical digestion in the stomach.
-Explain the secretion that protects the stomach.
-For both the liver and the pancreas, describe their digestive functions and name secretions.
-For each nutrient (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats), state the end product of digestion.
-State the two major functions of the small intestine and describe how they are performed.
-Describe the structure and function of the large intestine.
-Describe each of the following malfunctions:  Ulcers, constipation, diarrhea, appendicitis, and gallstones.
-Explain the role of enzymes in chemical digestion.
-For each of the following nutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and fats) state sources in food, use by the body, and relative amounts needed.
