Modern Genetics (II) Objectives

-Define linked genes.
-Explain crossing over.
-Compare autosomes with sex chromosomes.
-Explain how sex is determined in humans.
-Define sex-linked traits, give an example, explain why men are more often affected.
-Solve sex-linkage problems.
-Define carrier.
-Interpret pedigree charts.
-Define mutations and explain how they are passed to offspring.
-Compare mutations that affect chromosome number (non-disjunction and polyploidy), and structure (additions/deletions).
-Explain mutations that affect genes.
-Define and give examples of mutagens.
-Explain artificial selection including inbreeding and hybridization.
-Explain the role of the environment in gene expression.
-Describe the following techniques:  Screening, amniocentesis, and karyotyping.
-Describe the following genetic disorders:  Phenylketonuria, sickle-cell anemia, and Tay-Sach’s.
