Molecular Genetics (III) Objectives

-Define gene, including structure and function.
-Define DNA, explain where it is found.
-List the 3 raw materials of genes (DNA).
-Define nucleotide (subunit), and explain how they are named.
-Define polymer and name the process that forms it.
-Explain the Watson and Crick model of DNA structure.
-Define replication, explain when it happens, and explain why it is necessary.
-Describe the steps in DNA replication.
-Define RNA and explain where it is found.
-Explain 3 differences between DNA and RNA.
-Define codon and state its importance.
-Define transcription and list the steps and list the steps involved in protein synthesis.
-Define translation and list the steps involved in protein synthesis.
-Explain the “one-gene-one-polypeptide” hypothesis.
-Explain how genes determine phenotypes.
-Explain base substitution and addition/deletion mutations.
-Define cloning and explain the process used in mammals.
-Define genetic engineering and describe the process used to produce insulin.
-Describe the possible advantages/disadvantages of genetic engineering.
